BOOK MARK EVALUATION

What is CMYK?

The CMYK model, or four colour processes, is one of the most common models currently used in colour printing. CMYK stands for cyan, magenta, yellow and black.

CMYK is a subtractive colour model, meaning that it works by adding colour to a white background, thus reducing (or subtracting from) the brightness of the background. Black ink is included in the process because it is difficult to mix black from cyan, magenta and yellow.

Why should your Photoshop file be 300dpi when sending it to print?

So it makes for a higher quality image when it's printed on paper with no change in the appearance of what you are printing.

My Design

Use of Colours: The colours I used on my design were pretty much the normal colours you would use for things such as the sea being blue, a tiger  being orange, black and white etc. It reflects my theme well as it promotes the basic use of colours that are described throughout the book and film.

Use of Imagery: For my use of imagery I wanted to base my bookmark on something similar to the actual book/movie poster design which is the Tiger enlarged on the screen with the sea and Pi below him as the Tiger is one of the main characters in the book. I created a cartoon version of this as i sketched the Tiger face myself.

Use of Text: For my text I wanted to make a font that would sort of represent carvings on a boat.

Hierarchy of Information: The first thing i read was the blurb as i think reading the blurb on a book gives you the best overall idea and imagination as to what the book is about. This allowed me to easily create my book mark design because I knew i wanted to link the Tiger to the Sea on my book mark.

Tools and Techniques: One of my techniques was i hand sketched the Tiger in pencil and scanned it into Illustrator. I then used the paint replace tool to colour in the Tiger. Also on Illustrator i used the sharpen tool and white balance tools to alter the thickness of the pencil lines i sketched so they were more visible. For my text I used the pencil on illustrator to draw the type of font I wanted and also used the colour replace tool to colour it in. For the Sea i just used the pain tool to draw different shades of blue underneath the text and the Tiger.

What is most successful about your design?

The most successful thing about my design I think would be drawing the Tiger as i'm not very good at sketching anything. I think the book mark would easily be recognisable even without the text of the book because The Life of Pi is still such a popular book and film, people would relate a Tiger and the Sea to the book.

Life Of Pi Bookmark: By Rosie Kinsella

This is my final design for my book mark.

My book was based on the Life of Pi.

I thought it would be cool to include one of the characters on the book mark so i picked the tiger (Richard)

I didnt want too much going on in my book mark which is why it looks so simple.

Question 7

7) What have you learned about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

My strengths
I was easily able to complete tasks using my developed skills using software such as Indesign, Photoshop and Illustrator.
I edited my photo's mainly using Illustrator, as part of my ideas for my front cover included creating some sort of art work over my models face. Illustrator allowed me to do this as you can see below.
I used photoshop to correct mainly lighting, sharpen some features of the face and add grey scale filters.
I was confident using Illustrator the most as i used it to edit my magazine through out the entire creation process.

My Weakness's

I found it difficult to remember what certain tools were for when having to continue editing my front cover after a period of days.

The detail of the colours around my models eyes could have been neater and brighter.

I would of liked my magazine to of been printed on photo paper so i could achieve a glossy finish.

FRONT COVER 2

This is the photo I have taken and chosen for my front cover.
I edited it using Photoshop. I changed it to black and white and really looked to have one feature of my models face in a bright colour.
I decided to have her eyes a bright violet purple. I did this by using the paint tool, and selected to colour it 'within the lines'. It was very easy but its hard to remember!

FRONT COVER

FINALLY!
This is my final front cover design.

Updated Vision Contents Page

This is my contents page design. I designed this using Adobe Illustrator. I based the style on ELLE magazine as i really like how they do their content pages. I just used half of the writing on their to fill up the gaps because i obviously wont be writing and producing all of that. I used fonts cambria, Helvetica mainly for this contents page, because they are the fonts i am having my articles in.

Vision Contents Page

Screen grabbing always dulls the colour of my work its so annoying.

Anyway, today i used illustrator to design my contents page and this is the design i came up with.
I got ideas for this design and style from Marie Claire. I like the way they listed the titles of the page, and the actual way they listed it, which is down the left side of the page.

I thought by having a featured story picture in the contents page it would look more appealing. As she is Ashley Greene I put her name at the top of the page, and if i were to continue the magazine i would do so with anyone that was on the front cover.
